Durham Tees Airport (MME)
Durham Tees Airport, which was known as Teeside Airport until 2004, is the second largest airport in the northeast behind Newcastle. It is conveniently located just six miles outside of Darlington, ten miles from Middlesbrough and 24 miles from Durham so it is really easy to get to as a result.
Durham Tees Airport currently supports four airlines and has scheduled flights heading to 20 different destinations so it does offer some choice as to where passengers can go. There is only one terminal but it is able to handle 3 million passengers annually, even though less than 700,000 people passed through in 2008.
Although there has recently been an expansion program take place at the airport, which has now concluded, it is still a relatively small airport compared to the majority of the others in the country. However, that is why some passengers prefer to fly from there. The facilities are excellent and equipped to handle more passengers than actually pass through, which tends to make flying from the airport a more pleasant experience.
The facilities are comprehensive and include the following:
-
2 amusement arcades
- Alpha Airport Shopping with various duty free goods
- Internet cafes
- Bureau de Change and cash machines
- Car hire desk
- Payphones
There are also food and drink facilities, including:
- Cafe Oasis
- Cafe Express
- Costa Coffee
- Yard Of Ale
Useful Information
There are baby changing facilities, a first aid treatment centre and information desk. The disabled facilities are comprehensive, with an ambulift available, a wheelchair request system and disabled car parking.
